Why the choice matters
Under UK GDPR, you stay responsible for your data even after a contractor takes your equipment. Choosing a data destruction company is really choosing who you trust with that responsibility.
Eight questions to ask
- Who collects? Their own staff, or a courier?
- Where is it processed? Ask for an address. We process at our own sites at Battersea Power Station in London and in Nottingham.
- What standard do you erase to? Expect NIST 800-88, with verification.
- What happens to drives that fail erasure? They should be physically shredded.
- What does the certificate show? Every serial number and the method used. See what a certificate must include.
- Do I get a Waste Transfer Note? You should, under the WEEE Regulations.
- Are there minimums or hidden charges? Get them in writing before collection.
- How quickly can you collect? Equipment sitting in a corridor is a risk in itself.
London specifics
Loading bays, building management sign-off and parking restrictions in areas like the City, Canary Wharf and Westminster all affect collection. A London-based team will plan around them. See data destruction City of London, Canary Wharf and Westminster.
Our main London service page is data destruction London.
